That it starts with rhinoplasty is a bad look.

Rp is an elective cosmetic surgery that claims no problem benefit or threat of harm in not doing it - the health secretary is not calling it life saving, proven, etc. It is not covered by insurance "as healthcare" / "medicine" etc

So far at best this seems to be an "alcohol is one of the most damaging drugs and is legal, therefore we don't need to worry about fentanyl" what aboutism.

There's plenty of concern over shitty therapeutic practices, over medicalizations, etc.

We also aren't coerced into having to celebrate 14 year old nose jobs as identify affirming. It may be incredibly shitty that 14-year-olds are getting nosejobs, but they generally need not only the financial support of their parents, but every other type of approvement and support as well. The parents do not risk losing access to their children or having them taken by the state, if they don't give them a new nose.

There's also just lots of things that aren't true (no concerns over badly managed / underfunded hospitals) - I can find plenty of stories over failing hospitals, over medicalizations, etc.

Yes but it’s literally a few hundred trans youth a year getting surgeries. It’s such a tiny, obscure amount but it’s front-page news everyday.

the gender industry has spent 20 years on a billion dollar PR and lobby campaign designed to enable kids to take gender meds without parents consent. a huge part of this campaign is keeping these issues away from the public. a lack of awarness by the public was the only way gender policies could be enacted. this was known 20 years ago. so all these polcies were put in place without the pubic knowing. or the public was lied to. now people are just learning what this lobby and activist group has put into place. theyve created the biggest medical scandal in the past 100 years. theyve placed women rights back 300 years putting bio men in womans spaces. theyve gotten progressive ppl to approve the most regressive homophobic polcies anywhere in the world. and ppl are just now waking up to all this

Every day there’s front page news stories about transgender murderers, gender clinic scandals, reporting on trans issues…Every day! It’s nuts.

Here’s today’s: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11791141/Woke-LA-DA-George-Gascon-SUSPENDS-attorney-misgendered-transgender-child-molester.html

Yeah I link to many stories in my article. But there are 4-6 million kids on psych meds. The broken mental health system is nationwide and massive. Yet trans issues are front page news everyday. 4,000-8,000 kids on hormones and puberty blockers.

"4,000-8,000 kids on hormones and puberty blockers"

Tuskegee had ~600 participants. Tuskegee remains a potent condensed symbol, even 50+ years since it ended.

The trans cult in medicine has created another one, and whataboutism doesn't address its fundamental issues.

Apparently it was about 50,000 lobotomies that were performed in the United States, over a roughly 40-year lifespan, so a little over a thousand a year. Now of course puberty blockers are different, but the numbers are also rapidly going up there.

"This tally and others in the Komodo analysis are likely an undercount because they didn’t include treatment that wasn’t covered by insurance and were limited to pediatric patients with a gender dysphoria diagnosis. Practitioners may not log this diagnosis when prescribing treatment."

https://www.reuters.com/investigates/special-report/usa-transyouth-data/

Undercount is even more likely when you consider the financial incentives to move hundreds of thousands of gender dysphoric adolescents onto puberty blockers and/or cross-sex hormones.

On what basis? Why not 10x the figure? Why not 100x or 1000x?

Is anyone claiming that kids will kill themselves if they don't get timely rhinoplasties? Are people losing their jobs for criticizing the general overmedication of children? It is obviously the social context that is drawing people to this question, and there's more to be said about that than "culture war," I think.

I do appreciate you drawing more attention to the shit show that is mental health care in the US, it's something that has affected me greatly and is severely under-discussed. Hopefully we won't have to make that culturally radioactive to get more attention and make progress on that front.

gender affirming surgery isnt the point.

surgery isnt needed to cause permanent loss of sexual function. the pills do that. the pills are handed out like candy to any kid that wants them. and of course they do. theyve read on the internet that the pills solve every normal childhood issue. so they ask for them. one problem with this is the pills dont help anything. they make all these problems worse. the governments of UK, Sweden finland found that blockers and hormones dont help gender dysphoria, mental health, social function, nothing . nada. ziltch. yet these kids are lied to and told these pills will help. thats called fraud. the US gov has never done a review if this "care" helps. it doesnt. medical group bmj found that people pushing pediatric gender care shouldnt use the word "evidence based". thats a term that has a medical meaning and it doesnt apply to gender care.

https://www.bmj.com/content/380/bmj.p382

much of what people use to promote gender care are simply lies. pretty much all of it. meaningless online polls , low quality short term studys paid for by pills companies are fraud. show me your medical claims i will show you how its bogus. every one. the care doesnt work for kids and adults arent doing too hot on this care either. amsterdam says long term people on this care die early 2x as often as ave and have very high suicide rates.

but if kids dont take gender meds, 85% of kids grow out of dysphoria with puberty. but if they do take gender meds their dysphoria continues. the meds cause dysphoria and alot of other issues.

adults can do as this want. no one cares how adults ID as long as they dont rob the rights of womem kids gays and others. kids have a human right to experience puberty without being conned out of it

Thank you for adding some important context to that whole debate.

It does feel somewhat worse than other fields of medicine; the culture at large (no longer?) valorizes boob jobs and nose jobs for teenagers the way it does medical transitions, and I don't think anyone ever told parents their daughter will kill herself if they don't immediately get her that nose job. But you are probably right that much of this (lack of following guidelines, understaffed clinics just throwing pills at everybody) isn't specific to trans healthcare, but just a different version of the pathologies that plague large parts of the US (and other countries') healthcare system. In the grand scheme of things, Dr Youn and Dr Teetus Deletus advertising to children on TikTok might just be symptoms of a similar problem.

That being said, both sides seem to engage in some ignoring here. "But teenagers can get breast implants" seems to be a common argument from the other side; sure they can, but I'm not sure I like that without proper safeguards either.

“the culture at large (no longer?) valorizes boob jobs and nose jobs for teenagers the way it does medical transitions”

The hashtag #nosejobcheck on TikTok has 3 billion views. That far outweighs any trans surgery. The frenzy around trans stuff makes it seem medical transitions are more valorized or sought after than it seems.

Point taken, social media is a shitshow. What I was thinking of is that my impression was that Madonna's and Dylan Mulvaney's new faces seemed to get pretty disparate coverage in the lefty media.

> He’s referring to plastic surgeons like Dr. Murray who use TikTok to find patients as young as 14. “They weaponise mental health, and say the operations will solve your problems and make you feel better.”

But doesn't the current narrative on transition make it harder to address problems like this? If medicalisation of trans kids needs to be unconditionally accepted and celebrated, as it is crucial to allow them to be their "true inner selves", and any suggestion to the contrary literally puts their lives in danger, why should gender affirming surgeries be limited to trans children? Surely gender dysphoria can't be that different from the general dysphoria of hating your ugly nose.

My point isn't that this is the most important problem in medicine today. But I would suspect part of why it is more salient is that people like Dr. Murray aren't allowed to claim that their nose jobs solve all your problems and save your life with no push-back from reasonable people.

I mean, all of this is effed up and if 10000% support a blanket ban on all aesthetic surgeries for under 18s and all advertising of those services in any place a child MIGHT see them, for ANY reason including dysphoria. Kids can’t consent to this shit and having parents that go along with it doesn’t make it OK!
